SLEIGH RIDE IS AMERICA'S BEST-LOVED CHRISTMAS SONG OF 2009

SLEIGH RIDE has topped a new list of the Most-Played Holiday Songs in America for 2009. The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) tracked over 2,500 radio stations nationwide to find the most popular holiday tunes played this Christmas. The number one most-played holiday song in the ASCAP repertory this holiday season is "Sleigh Ride" (written by Leroy Anderson with lyrics by Mitchell Parish) - played 118,918 times on the 2,500 sampled radio stations.

ASCAP also named Sleigh Ride as the third most performed holiday song of the past decade. The data was compiled with the help of Mediaguide, the most comprehensive digital audio performance tracking technology in the world.

ASCAP President and Chairman Paul Williams said "There's a sense that people tend to gravitate towards tradition, especially at the holidays, and our top 25 list confirms this. So, whether you're listening to holiday music on an iPod or a vintage record player, these time-honored favorites are sure to evoke the magic of the season and memories of holidays past."

"Sleigh Ride" is the only holiday song on the list written originally as an instrumental piece for a symphony orchestra. The Boston Pops Orchestra gave the first performance in a concert conducted by Arthur Fiedler at Symphony Hall in Boston, May 4, 1948. Mills Music published it that same year. The Boston Pops Orchestra recorded it in June of 1949. Mitchell Parish added lyrics in 1949.

Boston Pops Laurate Conductor and Oscar-winning composer John Williams has praised Anderson’s music, "As someone who writes music, I can never take light things other than seriously. And the humorous thing in music, the light thing, the bonbon - I have abiding respect for someone who can bring that off as deftly as Leroy Anderson did repeatedly."

Leroy Anderson's music has been played in symphony halls and band shells around the world for more than 50 years, instantly becoming a part of the lexicon of American music. Pieces such as "Sleigh Ride," "The Syncopated Clock," "Blue Tango" and "The Typewriter" are at once accessible to general audiences and appreciated by artists for their musicality.
